Indeed. I continue to use 5.1. I ran 4.2 and 5.0 together for
about 2 years. I expect it will take me at least as long to
convert to 8.
I did get the upgrade to Corel Central; this is my preliminary
experience:
I ordered the Corel Central disk ($9.95 "shipping"). It came
Airborne Express, along with a copy of the one-disk version of
Grolier's Multimedia Encyclopedia, 1998, which I hadn't expected,
and which was surely worth the $10.
The Corel Central Disk was actually a fresh Wordperfect 8.0
installation disk, so I did a fresh installation of WordPerfect,
Presentations, Photopaint, Central, DAD (Desktop Applications
Director), and Quattro. A full installation of all, not including
the documents on disk or the clipart and fonts, was 300 Megs. A
typical installation is more like 120-160 megs, depending on
options, so the difference is in the lesser-used viewers and
import filters. These include some for older versions of Word,
Word Star, and various graphics formats.
I also installed the software developers kit, which includes some
materials for macro development, and are invoked from the menu
bars of the major applications. This is in a separate directory
in the distribution CD, and is not on the regular setup menu.
INSO's Quickview 4.0 was on the disk, and I installed it again.
There's a trick to using it, which is to use VIEW/Options to
click AUTO on the GENERAL tab, so that it will always be invoked
with the same settings as the last time. Then click
DOCUMENT/VIEW/DRAFT, which will show the documents in the most
readable mode. The default is NORMAL, which shows the document in
a sort of preview mode, which is generally unreadable (showing
tiny fonts and the margins, etc). Anyhow, it works as well as 3.0
in this mode. I tried it on a few HTML documents, and it did a
better job than 3.0 in this mode.
The Corel Central is an address book/calendar application. I'll
try to work with it over the next few days or weeks, though I
have some Sidekick phone books that have to be converted. It
comes with an integrated version of Netscape 4.01a, which it
offers to make your default browser (but does not insist). It
says you must install this version to use Corel Central with the
internet, even if you already have another browser (I have 4.02
installed), so that's 20 unnecessary megs. I'll see if I can
configure it to share my 4.02 bookmarks and address book (but
4.02 plugs some security holes in 4.01). I can see my
productivity dropping even further, as I spend all my time trying
to get these applications running. I was *happy* with Wordperfect
4.2, and converted to 5.1+ only under duress. Now I have 8.0
coexisting with 5.1+ and I bet it will be years before I complete
my personal conversion. (And there's not a dime's worth of
difference between Quattro Pro and Excel, but that's another
"upgrade" that's been forced on me by the rest of the world.)
It also installed a new version of Quicktime, but this turned out
to be the same 2.1.2.59 that the previous version had installed.
Anyhow, it was a relatively easy installation, with only 2 or 3
reboots (more than one, I'm sure). I'm now down to 500 megs free
on my C: drive, although I have a few hundred megs free on my C2
(alternate boot C:) drive. (And if the next version of a certain
piece of software supports Office 97 instead of 95, I can dump
the dual-boot and recover about 750 megs.) E: and F: are at 509
megs, the largest I can make them with 8K Fat 16 clusters, and
I'm not quite ready to convert them to FAT32, until I'm positive
I'll never have to revert to DOS 6.2 for any reason. (C:, D: and
G: are FAT 32).
