'They' didn't 'send him back to basic,' they sent him to Wilford Hall AF 
Hospital at Lackland AFB.  While *all* AF basic military training was
and presumably still is at Lackland, there are things at Lackland other
than basic training.  Wilford Hall was and presumably still is one of the
best hospitals in the AF.

I find that a stretch, but it's possible - however unlikely.  Patients
generally aren't segregated by rank.

FWIW, nearly thirty years ago I played volleyball on the Offutt AFB
varsity team.  We had two bird colonels and a two-striper on the
team.  On the intramural level the team I played on had a bird
colonel on it and was generally mixed officer/enlisted.
