| subject: | Cheap RAM |
KR> there seems to be divided opinion in the industry as to whether KR> prices will remain low or go back up to some degree. the KR> feeling is though, that it aint going to get too much cheaper KR> in the short term. i'm just glad that i didn't take 16megs when KR> it seemed like a bargain at $400, i got 32 for almost the same KR> price. Me too! With the Delphi-2 offer I was tempted to go the whole hog and upgrade to Win95 with 24Mb, but as soon as I saw 16Mb at $400 I became immediately suspicious and decided to wait. 8 ICs for $200 (less $20 for the board) is still $22.50 each, and the chip (and package) is smaller than a TV remote (for instance) that sells at $5. You can buy a one-chip micro for $10. I reckon the *real* price of RAM is about $100 ($10 each plus $20 for the PCB), regardless of size once they get the production techniques right. When something is dumped by a manufacturer with excess capacity (as this 16Mb RAM seems to have been), the price usually dips rather than levelling off. I'll wait a fortnight to see if it hits $150 or goes up to $250, but in any case I'll be amazed if it ever sells much above $200 again.
