You bring up a good point. A lot of the new job markets are for admin
assistants; that is, if you don't want to be slinging burgers but you aren't
qualified enough to go salary, you end up being a temp worker or an office
assistant. Both jobs are pretty demeaning, and I think it has to do with the
fact that the position is traditionally a woman's job (secretary), and so
there
is a lot of sexism involved with that job.

Absolutely. People make a big deal out of these "self-made millionaires"
(like
bill gates, who started his business with a loan from his father, something
that most people don't get), forgetting that their story is a one in a
million
chance. And I do mean CHANCE because if you think for one minute that these
people are somehow more intelligent, harder working, or more innovative than
the guy working as a secretary, you are just buying into the crap that they
feed us.
And to say that just because we have affirmative action now that racism in
hiring is gone is naive. For minorities, it is still "last hired/first fired"
and you can see it in the workplace every day. Where I work, they have just
enough black people working there to make their quota. Being white, I have
the
misfortune of other white people thinking its okay to make racist comments to
me. I've worked quite a few places where I've been told outright that they
don't hire blacks. I worked at a construction company where applicants would
come out to the job site, and the hiring manager would immediately disregard
any applicant who was black.
