What bloat?  My initrd's are still under 8M.  The development partition -
even with X libs ready, willling and able - is less then 300M and that
includes C and C++ with extra math libs for all sorts of processing, even

Right.  I agree wholeheartedly with that.

Somewhat.  Mostly he distributes source so you can build your own, along
with his configs and build script(s) but his compile is there for download.
 Add a kernel and voila!  Ready for booting and only requires 4M.  However
I like building my own and add a few things that I use which is why my
initrd's require 8M.  I still have some elbow room though.
