BK>> I just wonder how someone who never served has the gall to post
BK>> "on behalf of... everyone who actually *HAD* a military
BK>> career...".
BA>>> I don't think either Massey or Hull served more than four
BA>>> years active duty.
BK>> I wonder how anyone gets off complaining on behalf of all those
BK>> who served a long time without ever seeing combat, and leaves
BK>> out those who served less than four years, but left after being
BK>> wounded in combat. Including those who were permanently
BK>> handicapped as a result. Counting only those in Fidonet.
BK>> BTW, do you feel better knowing Mimi is speaking for you?
BA> No.
BK>> I wonder if Mimi knows that the Army doesn't even require 4 years. I
BK>> wonder if she realizes, without further info, those listed who
BK>> served in the Army might have served only two years.
BA> Draftees were called up for two years *active* service.
BA> There was another six year commitment to the reserves that
BA> followed (I think 4 years active reserve and 2 years
BA> inactive). If somebody volunteered for a 4 year active
BA> duty hitch, the reserve time was only two years.
When I went in the total commitment was 6 years. Minimum two
years active, two years reserve and two years inactive reserve.
Any additional active duty time reduced the reserve time. Those
who joined the reserves directly got 6 years ready reserve, no
inactive reserve time. National guard counted as ready reserve.
BA> When one retires between 20 and 30 years service, one is
BA> actually transferred from active duty to the 'retired
BA> reserve' until one reaches what would have been
BA> the 30 year point.
Yes, I remember that. Though I thought it was age 55.
BK>> OTOH, counting reserve time, all of us who were not medically
BK>> discharged served 6 years. At least those who served around the
BK>> time I did.
