Unless things have changed drastically, oceanography is not a field to enter 
with the object of making your fortune.  I had a part-time instructor working 
for me who had a BS in Oceanography from the University of North 
Carolina....he worked construction.  I was out with him one day when we ran 
into another fellow who also had a degree in oceanography......he worked the 
city counter at a tool supply house.
Jobs are few and far between, and I earn considerably more money as a 
registered nurse than the marine biologists working for the local power 
utility.
Enter oceanography if you have a love of water and science.....but not to get 
rich.
