It used to be that you could buy small audio amps that would drive a
speaker to full room volume from a mic from RadShack for a few $$, but
those days are gone forever.  (I made several intercoms using them).
Check the handbook for schematics of small af amps.  They are easy to
build with a few $$ of easily available parts.  The hardest part would
be etching a PC board for it.
