Hi David,
Some interesting comments in your message. I haven't read AUDIO magazine
recently, but I used to follow it carefully long ago, even got a chance to
meet and talk with some of them. Sorry to hear that it is going down hill.
DM> Say, why would one speaker of a pair succumb to foam rot

DM> What's the deal? Woofers from different batches?
Difficult to say. I'm not a materials expert, so this is a bit out of my
league. Maybe someone else can help with the "why" of it.
DM> Is replacing the surround cost effective (a DIY project?) or
DM> would I be better off with a replacement woofer?
I wouldn't try to replace the surround myself, but having a reconing place
do would be a good idea. I'd suggest getting both woofers done at the same
time so that they are "matched". Do check the reputation of the reconer
before allowing them to work on them.
DM> Or should I try to convince the wife unit that $500 for a pair
DM> of Magnapans is too good to pass up?
You could give it a try.. I'd go for it, but then I'm not your average
wife unit
(Dear Bonnie, Dear Bonnie, you won't believe this...)
