JF> definately NOT a stock sound effect. I heard that Bobby Prince used
JF> various sounds, like an airlock sound plus a jet flight sound to make
JF> it the way it is.
That's sort of what I was getting at. While some of the sounds used are
pure stock straight off the CDs, others use pieces of sounds that have been
remixed. For example, to get the sound of Duke's gun hitting the floor in
the cinematic at the end of level 2, I mixed 8 or 9 different CD sounds,
some with pitch shifting and/or EQ, down into a single effect.
JF> took that, slowed it down and cleaned it up, and now everytime one of
JF> those guys decides to toss flaming death your way, you hear that
JF> panther growl.
Fortunately, I don't need to go to the zoo for this - we have a good
collection of panthers here. ;-) However, I have had to do a small amount
of custom foley.
JF> Good idea! It would be great for Prey, and maybe give you an edge
JF> over your competitors. Speaking of which, why not get a rock band to
JF> do Prey's music? Nine Inch Nails' background music for Quake is
JF> actually quite good.
I disagree - it's okay and rather appropriate, but not stunning. As for
Prey's music, it's much too early to divulge what we're considering. All I
can say is that we've built up a rather decent music production setup here,
including a Kurzweil K2500RS, which will make its presence known it
everything from Shadow Warrior onward.
JF> Probably some fairly older versions, no later than 1995. Not very
JF> cooperative. Of course, that doesn't matter now. I have an AWE32,
JF> probably one of the most compatible sound cards on the market.
Eccchhhh. I have an AWE32 in my MIDI machine for compatibility testing
only. Frankly, I hate the thing, especially its MIDI patch set. Give me a
Roland/Edirol SCD-15 or a Yamaha DB50XG daughtercard anyday.
JF> Any particularly cool sound effects that I should know about? I
JF> hope the railgun (it IS in there, right?) is done well.
That's one I didn't do. Most of the weapon sounds were in before I got
hold of it, although I have done a few revamps.
JF> By the way, how come you don't use the WAV format for sounds? It
JF> would be much easier for the people who don't own Sound Blasters or
JF> have managed to find 3rd-party sound editors.
It has to do with the sound engine, which is the same thing we used for
Duke. It was written with VOCs in mind. Shadow Warrior was so far along
when I came in that it was too late to change to anything else. BTW, HMI's
SOS system still uses raw PCM data instead of WAVs or VOCs.
JF> Too bad I can't hear those sounds, yet. Unless Shadow Warrior is
JF> out, and I'm blissfully unaware...
It isn't out, but like I said, some of Lo Wang's comments are posted in
Real Audio format on our web site.
LJ> Our talent (don't know if I can mention who he is yet - nonetheless,
LJ> he's very good) does the voice,
Since I've received clearance here, his name is John Galt. If you've seen
Forrest Gump or JFK, you've heard him: he did LBJ's voice in both movies.
JF> A lot of work it seems! Good to see there's some real attention to
JF> detail here. By the way, do you have an "I spent too much time
JF> underwater, I need air!" sound? That was particularly interesting in
JF> Quake, and I would love to see it in Shadow Warrior.
Can't get that specific in my comments at this time.
JF> I suppose I could hook up my DiscMan (I LOVE that extra jack!) and
JF> play the Duke theme, but how would I get it to successfully loop? As
JF> you know, the 1st track of the CD is pure data, and I don't want my
JF> player to destroy my wonderful Pak CD. By the way, how CAN I play it,
JF> when the episode 4 cutscenes play off of the CD? Unless it
JF> automatically stops...
Good question. Buy two copies of the CD - one for the computer, and one
for the boom box.
