DD>> If you want your port & modem to lock at 38,400 you must
DD>> send an AT command at 38,400 followed by an &W to write

PE> You just made that up. The manual does not say what
PE> happens. In fact, if you type ATZ at 38400, it WILL auto baud
PE> rate detect, and send the answer, "OK" back to the computer.
PE> It decides to send "RING" to the computer at a rate other
PE> than 38400 though. Fucked, either by design or by a bug.
DD> Upon an incoming call the modem sets the com port to the speed stored in
DD> NVRAM. That is how the USR modem works. The book says to ensure you have
DD> your software set to the same speed. It does NOT set the port to the speed
DD> of the last issued AT command.
DD> Why is this so hard for you to understand?
Why is it so hard for you to understand that a modem that sends
some things at 38400, and some things at 57600, to the SAME
TERMINAL, is fucked by design or bug?
PE> That's funny, that's exactly what I reckon they're worth
PE> too, considering it is worse than my Spirit II.
DD> I have never been able to maintain a 33,600 connect with your Spirit . . .
I said reliable, not faster.
DD>> USR Couriers work perfectly well at my
DD>> place, especially when I dial my host who uses someother
DD>> brand modem.
PE> No they don't.
DD> It fuckingwell does! I ALWAYS get a 28,800 connect with my host. Have
The comment was about "work perfectly well". They don't.
PE> Not when Rod called you.
DD> Rod's modem is running on fencing wire. He made a number of calls here.
DD> SOme manages to download the file, others dropped carrier when his fucked
DD> modem wouldn't perform the retrains.
Actually, you have a good point there. Since I had retrains
disabled on the Spirit, it could well be Rod's modem that is
fucked retrain-wise. He's probably never really tested that.
If I disable retrains on the USR, that should prove whether or
not that is the problem.
I guess that's what I want - no retrains done on a V32bis. Will
the USR allow me to do that I wonder?
PE> Got a tech report from USR about that yet?
DD> Tech reports are academic claptrap. This modem works. It is proved by my
DD> connects.
It's disproved by your failed connects. BFN. Paul.
