Hi John, Greg, et al
Seems that my last couple of Car Audio messages has really ticked off a
few people. I have an incentive, I want Car Audio in a Car Audio echo,
so that we can deal with everything else here. If no one else has the
guts to do it, I'll Elist the damned thing myself, just so we can get
this echo back on track, and not have to deal with the honor and
integrity issues of car stereos here. This echo is to discuss AUDIO not
bruised egos. I'll respond to all of your messages in one response.
JJ> The lowest sub-bass has to be at least 110dB to be even audible over
JJ> an engine, so 120dB(most SPL comes from subs, right? I thought so)
JJ> really isn't very loud.
True, but only if your "car" is a AA Fuel Dragster getting ready to do
a 1/4 mile run. You've GOT to be kidding!!
Most SPL that is objectionable from a car is bass, because there is
nothing to contain it within the car unless you use enough sheet lead
to make the car impossibly heavy.
JJ>BG> having a problem with this so far is those that would most like
JJ>BG> use it, with claims that we are trying to stick our noses
JJ>BG> in the air.
JJ> I realize it's not just you, but I've definitely got the impression
JJ> from a few people that car audio is pretty much garbage, not
serious,
JJ> a load of crap, etc. Look at it from other's point of view.
That sums it up fairly well. Car audio "can" be excellent, but what's
the point? If you have a car like this, you can't leave it anywhere for
more than a few minutes and expect to find your car intact. Self
indulgence in levels you think is adaquate is excruciatingly painful to
nearly everyone else in the region, since cars can't contain their
sound. Why do I have to look at it from the "other's" point of view,
when so few that have car stereos are not concerned about others?
GC> I spent $300 on an enclosure for my car that would produce SPL in
the
GC> car and produce as little output on the outside as possible. MANY
GC> systems I design are along the same lines.
It's exactly this kind of comment that shows that you know absolutely
nothing about acoustics. The only function of an enclosure is to match
the drivers to the environment of the car interior. So, now you have
130dB or so floating around the interior, just what have you done to
contain that sound within that vehicle? Nothing. The only thing that
could help would be to have the subs right on top of the listening
position. The inverse square law then might get sound levels down
outside SOME.
GC> It's more than obvious that you've had your run-ins with those
GC> who have no regard for those at the red light next to them. I
GC> can't knock your reasoning in this matter. BUT THAT DOESN'T
GC> MAKE ALL CAR STEREO ENTHUSIASTS "FLAPPERS".
I can't hear you over that "flapper" that just went by. I don't
stereotype all car stereo owners like this, just because I take
shots at those who do because of their self indulgence and lack
of courtesy and right not to have to listen to them. Then there
is the self proclaimed experts who make downright stupid statements
like above.
That is my major beef. It doesn't mean I'm putting down those who
do use their systems responsibly, but if you want to think it does,
then it's a personal probem, NOT mine.
GC> We've done our best to enforce necessary views and make
GC> strong points in our arguments only to find that we are
GC> _still_ stereotyped and labeled along with those who have
GC> thousands of dollars tied up in amplifiers only to make noise.
You have made some excellent points, and made your point of view well.
GC> and those of us who sell to the public are only selling "garbage".
Where have I said anything about the quality of the equipment as being
garbage. I've talked about those that want volume at any distortion,
abusing what may have been quality equipment in the process, but usually
it IS garbage being abused in that situation.
GC> Well, so much for thinking I could get an intelligent response from
GC> those who are supposed to be knowledgible in the field of audio.
To get an intelligent response, one usually makes an intelligent
statement. Debate isn't necessarily all agreement. You may be talking
about quality audio, much of what I've been talking about has been those
that abuse it.
GC> I'm out of here. No need to reply.
I'll bet you're still here looking for an apology from me. You won't get
one. It's not my fault if you misinterpet everything that is said and
feel guilty because of it. Don't let the door hit you in the ass if you
are wallowing in self pity.
Get a Car Audio echo going, and have some fun with like minded folk who
will buy the statements like you and John Jewell made and was quoted
here. It's pure science fiction.
