Hi David, I heard a pair of the $500 Maggies a couple weeks ago and with
the exception of there being absolutely NO bass, was really impressed by the
small panels! They are extraordinary little speakers and worth far more than
the price!
They were set up about one meter from each side wall and about
1.5 meters from the wall to their rear. They were not toed in and I am not
sure that would have made any difference. The listening position was about 12
feet from them with the wall behind the listening position about two meters
to the rear of the chairs. They were driven by a single 200 WPC Parasound
with an Adcom CD & older/very basic/non remote preamp. The soundstage and
imaging was absolutely extraordinary! There was depth, height and width.
String quartet music was very well defined and precise while some new age and
a test disk with a good dose of jazz seemed very alive.
We didn't have time to mix in a subwoofer, so I can only
imagine what that might have brought. So if your "wife unit" is in need of
such a paired device, the Maggies would be a good place to begin looking.
Cheers, John
