Ah, a kindred soul.  My Model 80 had it, too. 
It was one of the originals, and had about 10
patches on the MB.
But the way I heard it, the original chips 
were 16550.  They had the bad FIFO, so the 
manufacturer redesigned them into the 16550a.  
But _they didn't work right either, so they 
redesigned them into the 16550af, the f 
presumably being the fth try to get it right.  
The final chip was the 16550afn, the n meaning 
it had a plastic case instead of ceramic.
