GM produced the soft rock trio "America" (Horse With No Name, Ventura
Highway, etc.). They were tolerable, but certainly nowhere near as
interesting as the Beatles.

"Nowhere as interesting as the Beatles" - yes - but more than
"tolerable." In their heydey they had great melodic and lyrical
composition. Martin's style was certainly highly compatable with their
"Holiday" album which launched 'Tin Man' and 'Lonely People' Tracks
like 'Miniature' 'Another Try' and 'Mad Dog' had those period qualities
that Martin also enjoyed on McCartney's "father Jim" influenced tracks
like 'When I'm 64' Your Mother Should Know' 'Honey Pie' et al....
