Not a bad idea.  Much of the core elements in Linux haven't changed that
much since I learned Solaris way back when.  What I discovered then was
c-shell which led to c and the 'discovery' that these things are totally
married to each other.  Once I started playing with that concept the rest
all started falling into place quite nicely.  These days bash scripting
takes the place of what c-shell did for me back then.

Anyhow, that is what originally got me hooked on ttylinux and those old
textbooks ought to be of great assistance to getting a feel for what is
possible.  However there are some noticable changes in the area of
networking Linux boxes, mostly hardware issues, but you have to start
somewhere.  Right?  One thing is for sure, kde won't get you there, and
hence Knoppix and the like.  Nice toys, quite a few 'broken', is all they
are and without the basic knowledge that is all those will ever be.
