Ok Louis, we need to get back on topic. If Gary hasn't said something in
a relpy I haven't read yet, my appologies.
The Purpose of this echo is discuss Delphi Technical issues. While we
tend to allow conversations drift a bit (human nature) a long as Delphi
is in the topic, we really want this to be a place for postitive
technical related discussions of Delphi and other products as they
relate or are used with Delphi.
This is not the place to have OS wars, Compiler Wars, etc. Delphi is a
fine product and works well. 3rd party books is where most of use get
the support not found in the docs and on-line help.
A comment about Cross Platform capability: If you plan to write Windows
Programs, your apps are not going to just port on over with no major
work to other OS's regardless of what you write them in regardless of
the compiler you use whether you use Delphi, C++, VB or Java because
each OS has different APIs, GUI requirements, etc. Java is not going to
be the end all, be all solution. For Console type apps or Internet/Web
based Apps, I think Java will do well, but as a tool for stand alone
apps, it is *NOT* the panacea and certainly not easy to learn. The
reason most of use use Pascal/Delphi or Basic/Visual Basic is ease of
use (especially in a Windows Environment). In my opinion, Java will not
address your concerns (at least in the Windows GUI ara) any better than
Delphi since you will need a Windows version and a version for
everything else.
If we can assist with Delphi, please feel free to post questions here.
