The purge-by-date setting is irrelevant.  Setting the maximum message limit
to zero (with SQSET or the -$m switch in SQUISH.CFG) in the .SQD
file is the only way to disable auto-purging of a Squish base.  The size of
the area will continue to increase until you delete messages manually (then
pack).
