Hi Bonnie,
BG> Sounds like typical macho BS to me like having 2000 horsepower out of
BG> a VW bug. I'm not impressed in the slightest. I'm suprised that anyone

I'm reminded of - A) the TV commercial for some Isuzu where a dad is
rolling his toddler through a Toys R Us type store when he's stopped
in his tracks with a slack jawed "Ooooh" by a bright red full size 4x4
in an oversized toy box - and - B) the one where two kids are listening
to cars drive by and one is identifying make, model, year, engine size
et cetera by their SOUND. The punch line there (after correct ID of
the brand new Camaro or whatever) is "Yeah, but what color?"
Duh. Bright red, of course. Shiny black is Bad too, of course, but
how many powder blue ones have you seen? I work with forty year old
guys who haven't outgrown the need to drive "shiny wed pickup twucks",
(as I teased somebody on one occasion only) but what the hell, they
don't relate to my music obsession either. Heck, I was thirteen once
too. And I can't honestly say I haven't witnessed the "mine's bigger
than yours" (or more expensive/esoteric whatever) syndrome in the
Audiophile community. Not Fido, no no... Some of those Masters of
Adjectives get damn snooty when somebody suggests the emperor's not
as clothed as he thinks he is. Wish I had the letters column from
the latest Audio magazine handy.
I'm not sure exactly what influence "any degree of intelligence"
has here... A big league display of jargon and firm opinion can
be very convincing if your knowledge/intelligence isn't combined
with a healthy dose of skepticism anyhow. And when hormones are
involved, all bets are off...
Oh well. Say, why would one speaker of a pair succumb to foam rot
and the other not? Happened to one of my EPI 100's, and now I
discover one of the no name speakers they suckered my wife into
buying at Crazy TV Lenny's 22 years ago has a rotted woofer too.
What's the deal? Woofers from different batches? Is replacing
the surround cost effective (a DIY project?) or would I be better
off with a replacement woofer? Or should I try to convince the
wife unit that $500 for a pair of Magnapans is too good to pass
up? (Dear Bonnie, Dear Bonnie, you won't believe this...)
