Paul, at 17:38 on Jan 30 1996, you wrote to Bill Grimsley... PE> Netcomm or Yum Cha, I have to make a gamble either way, which one? BG> The cheapest one possible, Paul. Dunno what you're on about here, but I can immediately think of half a dozen places locally to call for USR support. Plus either fax or phone to the US. Or messages to Joe Frankiewicz in USR_Modems. Big choice. Now, about NetComm... PE> 2. Flash rom. Rockwell's (i.e. NetComm) flash-ROM only updates the controller code, and has nothing to do with the masked, pre-programmed chipset. If that's buggy (and the first 19 revisions were), you're basically fucked, unless you can wangle a chipset replacement. With the USRs, ALL of the code is in flash-ROM. I'm not suggesting that USRs are bug-free, just that if a bug is identified, it can easily be squashed in the SDL. With NetComm, you're on a 50/50 chance. PE> 3. This being one of the 2 modems that are supposed to be the PE> best, at least being in with a chance of this being good? NetComm may well be an acceptable modem now, but because of their prior track record, I'm not prepared to pay good money to find out. But feel free to do so yourself. I don't care what you buy, as long as it works at 28800 bps. :) Regards, Bill --- Msgedsq/2 3.20* Origin: Logan City, SEQ (3:640/305.9) SEEN-BY: 640/305 711/934 |
