Stephen was waived by Sparky Anderson and then ranted:
SF> that you wouldn't mind identifying this "horse" which gave you the info.
SF> Is it a "confidential source"?
I'm not being secretive at all. This came from Time-Warner AND WTBS. Even
Terry knows about it. It was widely reported on CNN as well as several other
sources like ESPN.
SF> THat makes no business sense. The Braves will be run as a separate
SF> profit center, ad will have to suppor titself.
The Braves get a significant amount of money indirectly from Turner and NOT
WTBS. If they go off WTBS, WTBS saves money by NOT having to pay MLB for
being a Superstation AND WTBS also can put on some high profile programming
that will bring in STEADIER income (The Braves weren't helping WTBS's bottom
line as much when they were in the toilet).
SF> You sound like you don't know how this thing really works. Next, you'll
SF> be telling me that TW will soon SELL the team in order to buy MTV
SF> or something.
Look, Stephen, the Braves aren't the big ticket item on TBS and haven't been
for many years. They did help transform the station from a podunk UHF station
into the SS that it is today but when they went into the toilet, WTBS built
up a strong lineup to keep them from being as much of a burden if they
continued to blow chunks.
With TCI looking for any reason to replace their current lineup of non-TCI
stations with those that are aligned with them, Time-Warner *might* rescind
their decision but WTBS is in a far better position than WGN, which has been
replaced by TCI, because their lineup is stronger than WGN's WB lineup (Which
probably plays better in Chicago but not around the rest of the country).
SF> teams have chairmen and/or presidents other than Turner. Turner never
SF> did personally own the Hawks, Flames or Braves, TBS did.
WTBS has NEVER, EVER owned those teams.
SF> With the way they are running the organization from the front office,
SF> they seem pretty bush league to me anyway. Stephen
Really? They take a team that's in the toilet and built them into what they
are today and they're bush league? Puhleeze. If it wasn't for them, the
Braves would be the laughingstock of baseball.
