RM> former student stopped in today; he's a freshman this year
RM> at college. Like so many before him, he mentioned how he's
RM> working so much harder now than he was last year in high
RM> school. As he's talking, I'm thinking to myself: Here WE
RM> are, rethinking our educational system, our delivery system,
RM> our evaluation system, because kids are not succeeding in
RM> school, and here's a kid who was taking physics, presumeably
RM> one of our best students, who's telling me he hardly worked
RM> while in school (until now, in college)...
This kid didn't arrive in HS knowing the content of any math-based
physics course. If he got a good grade in it, he either did learn it (and
work to) _or_ the grades were inflated wildly. (My HS physics course had the
latter problem.)
He didn't arrive in HS knowing the content of any math-oriented chemistry
course, either. If he did well on grades in math-based subjects, he either
worked _or_ the grades were inflated. Or the standards were too easy.
