It doesn't (documented below).

So ....
I can ping the assigned IP (inside), but not the gateway (outside).
The default route is still known to the routing table.

I suppose that the problem could be at the external gateway router.

And, I should iptrace the interface next time, to see what some of the
packets look like, though with http proxy and DNS both running on
localhost, the traffic gets a bit messy.
