Day,
 I had this thought a few years ago about building a HUGE weight-driven 
clockworks. A large hunk of concrete, box of rocks, or whatever would be 
hoisted up, then lowered by a clockwork mechanism that would generate power. 
Total travel of the large weight would be relatively short, certainly less 
than 100 feet.
A few minutes with a calculator showed how impractical that would be.
Modern energy storage flywheels seem to be going towards light, high-speed 
outfits.
