subject: Students...

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but I can't help it. A
former student stopped in today; he's a freshman this year
at college. Like so many before him, he mentioned how he's
working so much harder now than he was last year in high
school. As he's talking, I'm thinking to myself: Here WE
are, rethinking our educational system, our delivery system,
our evaluation system, because kids are not succeeding in
school, and here's a kid who was taking physics, presumeably
one of our best students, who's telling me he hardly worked
while in school (until now, in college)...
Surely the "answer" to many of our problems is not in what
WE'RE doing, but in what our students are NOT?! Shouldn't
we be looking at ways to bring THEM around rather than
remaking our educational system so that IT works when THEY
don't? And is it even possible for us to DO it? Just
thinking out loud.....
