Hello Roy -

CA>>> Parallel cable maximum length is 10 feet.

JB>> I've not had problems with a 5m parallel cable. (it's
JB>> sheilded and has with twisted pairs....)

CA>> We're dicussing file transfers here, not printing (low
CA>> speed).

RJT> While the actual mechanical process of printing is slow,
RJT> the data transfer isn't necessarily.

Eventually buffers fill and transfer stops or buffers empty and
printing pauses.

RJT> The oldest printer I've ever used had at least an
RJT> 80-character buffer in it, and when you're talking about
RJT> newer stuff some of it can have megabytes of ram in there
RJT> for buffering, storing whole graphic images, etc. With
RJT> this being the case, the interface at either end of that
RJT> cable is going to go as fast as it's capable of, until the
RJT> buffer fills up at least.

Would seem so but in those days our expectations were to print
mainly text and not create banners to tape all over the walls.
;-)
