Hi All,
I am looking for an OS/2 based shareware/freeware WINS style Server or any
SMB based WINS Server code.
The background...
OS/2 Peer is based on the SMB (Server Message Block) protocol, so is WFGF,
SAMBA for *nix systems and most other compatible implementations, and SMB
uses NETBIOS (and NETBIOS over TCP/IP) as the main protocol set. When you
talk across a distributed network environment (hence the reason for NETBIOS
over TCP/IP) and start adding Windows clients, the Windows clients have
trouble finding out about resources that are not on the same LAN segment,
without additional S/W being required.
In a pure Windows environment, you solve this problem by using a WINS server
(IE spend more money...) so that Windows clients can find out about resources
spread out over the WAN, however the MS WINS Server only advertises Windows
specific resources, unless you add manual entries for the "non-Windows"
clients (EG - OS/2 Peer and other SMB based products). OS/2 clients dont need
a WINS server, they can be set up to talk directly to each of the segments,
negating the need for WINS, however when you use the MS WINS Server function,
it only works for MS products and not all generic SMB protocols.
I understand that there are other commercial WINS Servers available that
overcome this deficiency in the MS version and these products publish the
resources for ALL types of SMB clients, however I was wondering if anyone has
come across any OS/2 based shareware or freeware code that can do this as
well. This may be like searching for a needle in a haystack, but I still put
on gloves when I do the search........;-)
Any ideas folks?............pk.
