I agree entirely. A dub is a dub unless it is digital to digital, then
it is a clone. Any dub is going to be worse than the original
regardless, so why use high speed unless you don't mind if the quality
suffers a little. Heads and tape media are idealized for real time
recording.
A good transport should not cause significant damage to a tape though,
but most of the cheap transports are not good.
