By this I refer to my (inside) side of the interface; for which the
other side is my default route; This interface is the logical PPP
interface established by the dialer, which assigns me an IP (nobody
else should have this), and provides a "gateway" IP which becomes my
default route (which I expect is shared by others on the modem pool).

It's probably incorrect of me to refer to (think of) these as 'inside'
and 'outside'. Sorry about that.

What do you get for "netstat -a" and "route -n get
default" while the
DSL modem is connected?

and from the answer to the route query, there will be an interface
specified, use that  in "ifconfig
" and post that
also for us please.
