JL> I think that you are correct. The problem seems to lie in the
JL> FAX portion of MS Exchange. I can use any other Win95
JL> communications facility and it releases the modem on exit.
    Hi Jim,
Yes, that is the way normal comm apps would operate. A fax
program is not a normal comm app. It is more like a bbs, in that
it captures the port, waiting for a call. Every fax program I
have seen operates that way.
JL> HyperTerminal, for instance. However, once the FAX facility in
JL> MSExchange is activated it will not release the modem. It seems
JL> to just sit in the background and wait for incoming FAX's. I had
JL> the same problem with Windows 3.xx, but there I could disable
JL> the FAX program and go on about my business. Win95 doesn't seem
JL> to want to let you release the FAX capture once it is made. At
JL> least we haven't been able to figure it out yet.
That's why I mentioned the Network administrator stuff. The
network is capturing the com port for the fax program. Once it
does that, you no longer have control of that port on your system.
You can't turn off the fax program because it's not activated on
your system. To do so, you must have administrator control over the
entire network, which should allow you to terminate any process on
the network, including your son's fax program capture of your port.
The only other alternative is for you to walk over to your
son's system and turn off the fax program and turn off his system's
com port capture through the network. In effect, that is what
you're doing when you boot your system to regain control of your
port.
JL> You can use Win95 Apps, such as HyperTerminal when the modem is
JL> captured. You just can't seem to use a 16 bit application.
That is the way Win95's TAPI specification works. TAPI is the
standard by which Win95 controls port access. Com port sharing in
Win95 can only be accomplished if BOTH programs are TAPI compliant.
Telemate does not yet have that compliance.
JL> I noticed a couple of references by other people asking about a
JL> Win95 version of TMW. Maybe a 32 bit version is the only answer,
 JL> I don't know.
Assuming that Winfred will program the upcoming Win95 version
of Telemate in complete compliance with TAPI, then it will indeed
allow you to do com port sharing. Whether or not a version is
32bit is not important, the TAPI compliance is what will allow
port sharing.
