 SH> I don't think that you'd get much more than a Pentium or a PII for $50
SH> and that may not be worth the cost. I never could tell the difference
 SH> between my 486/66 and my P90.

I'd be happy with one or two more 486's. An extra computer or two
makes multitasking much simpler and more reliable

SH> But some things get odd. I have a HP scanner which I could not give
SH> away. It worked just fine and all I wanted for it was $50 but no
 SH> nibbles.

Probably you priced it too low: "If it was any good he'd be
asking a lot more than $50." It's a very common attitude.

SH> I would not even think of telling my employees to get new cars. I
SH> have suggested to a colleague whose car would not start in cold weather
SH> after being plugged in that she should get its battery and alternator
SH> looked at but that was a different story.:-)

I have heard of an employer who told someone that if he wanted to
keep working for the firm he should get rid of his old clunker or
park it around the corner: "We have an image to keep up."

OTOH I don't know whether the employee did what he was told, at
least in that case ;-)

SH> No one should ever say to anyone "you should do this".
However some
SH> one might say, "If you want to achieve this, you may need to
try that".

Certainly. That is of the nature of giving help, if it is well
intentioned and actually is useful.

... We could do that, but it would be wrong, that's for sure.
