They decided to go younger with the doctor and to change the executive
officer not long after the pilot was finished.  There were no plans to
change the character of Lyta or the actress  JMS had written the role
for Pat, and wanted her for the series.  Lyta was only written out in
favor of Talia because Warner Bros. failed to make a deal with Pat.
(Much to JMS's annoyance.)  At the time JMS wrote that post, he still
thought Lyta would be part of the series cast.
Once Talia was brought in, the hidden personality thread could be
moved from Laurel to her.
