Hello Roy -

RJT>> I've grumbled often in here and elsewhere about how stuff
RJT>> isn't made as well as it might be, not made to last.

--8<--cut

CA>> All true but I remember parents having to plan ahead just
CA>> to save and buy a phonograph or replace the existing radio.

--8<--cut

RJT> Funny, there must have been some of that influence in my
RJT> past, as I hate to throw things out even when they're
RJT> broken, if there's a chance of fixing them. Like the 3
RJT> monitors that are sitting in my office here which have
RJT> problems. Though the one next to this one that I use for
RJT> the linux box I picked up at a yard sale for $5.

The children of the American depression are still with us and
do influence us more than we seem to realize. Many of our more
powerful politicians were raised during the Great Depression.

RJT> And as far as plastic goes, I have several cards -- and
RJT> they all have a balance of zero! I rather like it that way.

--8<--cut

During the years I was married I usually had no outstanding
debts of any kind. I saved and paid cash for almost everything
or had short term loans and paid them off early.

RJT> I don't know how I'm going to get the message to these
RJT> grandkids, though.

You won't. Children are influenced by every person in their
lives but more so by teachers and other children. After that
they seem to be mainly influenced by friends and co-workers.

CA>>> Gen Xers (my children) are just overwhelmed by the
CA>>> knowledge they have to fight their own parents and
CA>>> grandparents for every scrap. After that they seem
CA>>> oblivious to what they need and think they can just wait
CA>>> for all of us to die?

RJT>> The ones I am most personally acquainted with seem
RJT>> oblivious to

RJT> > it.

CA>> Odd thing is that children mimmick their parents when they
CA>> are too young to differentiate as to why mommy does what
CA>> she does. Housewives on valium were the 'norm' in my time
CA>> and many grew up thinking taking multiple 'naps' is just
CA>> normal.

CA>> I suspect the recent popularity of prosac and other drugs
CA>> has done the same for today's children raised in
CA>> households where parents are too drugged to have anxiety
CA>> attacks over poverty or much of anything else.

RJT> It's a different world than the one we grew up in, in some
RJT> ways not a better one, and I just hope that we can help
RJT> them little ones deal with it the best they can.

The system of punishments and rewards has altered so very
drastically that I don't think I can offer a great deal of help
to my grandchildren. My 'way' of doing things is not the way
that is the most successful now. I see liars and scam artists
becoming millionaires and hard working serious people losing
their jobs and just about everything they've worked for. I have
no 'solutions' for this and even though people I've known in my
lifetime have explained to me how all this works my sense of
morality prohibits my passing on this knowledge to my
grandchildren so that they can 'suceed' in a world of thieves.
