I've been able to make my Supra 288 external make two totally differnt sounds
for 28K connects. One type of noise for V34 connects, and another, softer
gurgling sort of noise when it gets a V.FC connect.
Maybe that's what you have experienced.
Your friend's modem may be set up for a lot of V.FC connects as I have done
with mine for the BBS. Putting %G0S110=5 at the end of your usual init string
will do this (on a 288 faxmodem anyway).
Also check your volume, setting to L3 will make any of the modem's usual
noises seem a little sharp or harsh, as well as loud. :) I find L2
satisfyingly loud, and L1 too soft to hear in any environment other than
absolute silence.
