Gary,
I don't recognize your name - I have been ducking in and out of this
echo for probably close to ten years, so you may have been involved
for a while and know the score, or you may be a newbie. My point
being that Matt, a cynical collections lawyer from North Carolina,
uses this forum to sharpen his lawyering skills. He argues much the
way a lawyer trying a case would argue - misdirection, obfuscation,
and casting of doubt - all designed to cause a judge or jury to rule
in his favor out of a sense of confusion. It's not unusual for Matt
to provide made-up information or for him to try to try extrapolate
data to a level not warranted by logic. Matt *never* offers any
positive suggestions, he only likes to look for the weakness in any
position and try to open a hole in the logic - it is seldom worth
the time to try to debate with him.
I, too, am glad for the national debate on education. I don't agree
with all of it, but at least education has been placed near the top
of the priority list, where it belongs. As far as grade elevation,
it simply won't be possible with the new standards and mastery tests
being developed in 35 of the 50 states.
Glad to meet you ;-)
Chuck
