Hi, James! Saw this in another echo:
JB> You mentioned the technical term for your infliction,
JB> but would you mind explaining it like I'm a four-year
JB> old?
Seems to me the response, although it was very interesting, may
not have been quite what you had in mind. Maybe I can help.... :-)
Paraplegia
- weakness or paralysis in the lower part of the body
- usually results from damage *to the spinal cord* caused by disease or
injury (e.g. tuberculosis, sports/motor vehicle accidents)
Quadriplegia
- same as above, except that all four limbs are affected
Hemiplegia
- weakness or paralysis in the left or right side of the body
- usually results from damage *to the brain* caused by a brain tumour or
by a stroke which blocks one of the major arteries in the brain
The latter is not as well known among the general population as
the first two... but that's what George & Nora have. George advised
Nora to work hard on her therapy, and she seems to have taken his advice to
heart.... :-)
