NASA DRYDEN EMPLOYEE RECEIVES TOP SAFETY AWARD

NASA Dryden Flight Research Center's director of Research Engineering
will receive one of the Agency's highest safety awards March 6. J.
Larry Crawford will be presented a NASA Quality and Safety Achievement
Recognition (QASAR) award from NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe at the
Seventeenth NASA Continual Improvement and Reinvention Conference in
Alexandria, Va.

The QASAR award is one of four given to employees outside of the
agency's Safety and Mission Assurance organization in recognition of
continual improvement in reducing the number of on-the-job injuries.
Crawford is the first civil servant to be honored with a QASAR at NASA
Dryden, located on Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.

According to the award nomination, "Mr. Crawford has been a strong
advocate for specific considerations of systems safety in the Research
Engineering directorate. His previous experience in systems safety has
resulted in strong integration of the function with our technical
workforce... Of more importance, he continues to make system safety
techniques an integrated part of each subsystem engineer's tool
chest."

"This QASAR award means a lot to me because it was given to me by a
community of Safety and Mission Assurance people I worked with many
years ago who are very diligent at keeping us all focused on
protecting the lives of our people. I work mostly with engineers
today, but the spirit of the NASA safety community is always with me,"
said Crawford.
