Hi Paul,

PE> PE> DG>> Speeding up the 64/128 is not really
 PE> RG> There was/is a product available
PE> RG> called Turbomaster, this will speed up
 PE> RG> the C64 to 4mhz. (don't work in C128 mode).

PE> Actually there was a bit of confusion there,

True.. I was simply trying to correct DG's mistake.

 PE> PE> DG>> can connect a CMD hard disk via a
 PE> PE> DG>> *parrallel* interface - speed Hd
 PE> PE> DG>> access up by 7 or 8 times! Mucho faster!
PE> PE>> Hi Rod, you didn't mention anything about
PE> PE>> the above. Care to comment? BFN.
PE> RG> What am I supposed to comment on ?
PE> Not telling me that there was a way to
PE> get an 7-fold speed increase is a
 PE> fairly major omission!

True, *but* I didn't think you were interested in getting a ramlink as
well as a HD so it wasn't worth a mention.
Besides, the HD's can load a 200 block program in less than 8 seconds.
Since this is an abnormally large program for the C64 I don't consider
it worth the expense of a ramlink merely to reduce this load time down
to <1sec.

PE> RG> a parallel cable if you also have a
 PE> RG> Ramlink, this makes 'em 7 or 8
 PE> RG> times faster loading.
 PE>
PE> And why would you lose compatibility by doing that? BFN.

It basically depends on the program. Adding the parallel link is
introducing yet another incompatibilty factor. (Although in practice I
haven't had a failed load with the paralel cable that was overcome by
relying only on the serial link.

PE> P.S. The hard disk prices, provided by
PE> Exceldata, if I wrote them down
 PE> correctly, were:
PE> prices for CMD hard disks:
 PE> 245meg $1395
 PE> 170meg $1150
 PE> 85meg $995

Wow, and to think that when I bought mine I paid almost $1500 for 40
megs ! :-(

PE> If that is correct, I will get the 170
PE> meg drive, as the jump from 85 to 170

Or you can toy with my offer.. you buy me an FD4000 and 20 ED disks,
and I'll do a straight swap with one on my 40meg drives.

PE> P.P.S. Some people talk about a "parallel
PE> port". Do they mean the User Port
 PE> or the Expansion Port?

Tricky question 'cos both ports can be considered parallel depending
what and how you have things hooked up... the user port is connected
to the CIA's and any access must be done via these chips.. thr
Cartridge port has the CPU address lines fed to it so is more suitable
for expansion.
The Ramlink has its own parallel port.

Cheers
Rod
