| subject: | 286 XMS memory |
Hello Niels, >> NP> Using the 386 method of loading EMM386 only results in an >> NP> error message of "incorrect processor type" >> I wonder why? NP> I should have added " as I expected it to do" :-) :-) >> NP> Is there something I am missing that will make this memory >> NP> available for use?? >> You have about two choices, a Ramdrive or a disk cache like >> Smartdrive. NP> Mickey$ofts DOS 5 RAMDRIVE & SMARTDRV.SYS bothe refuse to co-operate NP> and inform me that there is "No XMS memory mamger installed" Erm - you did load HIMEM.SYS, yay? NP> I put the lines in CONFIG.SYS .... NP> DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS NP> DOS=HIGH NP> and managed to get the bulk of DOS out of conventional memory and into NP> High memory, but that was as far as I can get. Oh. Something very silly going on there in that case. Either a CMOS option (like the A20 or EMS settings) are not configured properly, or it may be a chipset specific problem. You'll probably also find, until you find the cause, that it won't run Win 3.1 either. I had 2 286's - one a later model with a half dozen ASIC chips on the motherboard, and an older one that was a discrete design with literally hundreds of standard TTL chips. Both only needed: DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS DOS=HIGH,UMB to enable the ramdrive/smartdrive entries to work. NP> Previous to this I had 1,048,576 of XMS, but it still leaves a nice NP> 983,040 bytes still free that I would dearly love to put to use. If there is an "advanced" section in the CMOS setup, have a close play with any settings that mention "A20" or "EMS". >> PS: I emailed that JPG to a couple of TML users (JG & DM), if all >> went well it should be on Paul's system soon... NP> Thanks heaps for that No worries. Did you get the file?
