strange...

try it on a unix system, or with winzip. or get a dos port of the unix uncompress
(not the m$ one) or the gzip program and try to undo it with them
(after g(un)zip or uncompress you'll still need to untar it)

two possible sorts of corruption spring to mind:

 check it for High-bit characters  if it doesn't contain any it's been
 corrupted using the wrong type of FTP,

 if you're familiar with a hex editor check it for 0x0a not followed by
 0x0d  if it doesn't contain lone 0x0a (line feed) that aren't preceeded
 by  0x0d carriage return  it's been corruupted by unix2dos

If it shows signs of thoose types of corruption it's beyond help.

other than that you could post the first 500 or so bytes (as hex or
uuencode) and I can check it out with a couple of unix tools for you.
