-> CRC's are not unique... here's one method of coming up with a serial

Contratulations, you're the first person to actually provide an alternate
method. Everyone else spends so much time saying what NOT to do, they
forget this all started as a question. Many in this echo could learn a
lot from your actions by presenting an alternative when one feels
someone elses method is not optimal. Instead of pointing the finger and
saying you're non-compliant, offer a solution. For that, I appreciate
your suggestion and will code something today.

Is there some MSGID server out there that is keeping count of all the
messages being generated daily and tracking all of this so when the 3 year
point comes you'll know whether or not your method made the grade?
Something (or someone) we all have to fess up to when we meet our maker?
Or is all of this fuss simply centered around a 'theoretical' potential
for a dupe? Now I've heard of modem police, but MSGID police? Oh gee.

Is this number so crucial that people would spend hours of their time
replying to messages, raising their blood pressure so high that their
comments come out as insults to someone they don't even know let alone
attacking someones programming skills?

You know, after spending well over 5 years coding for FTS networks, I've
never seen so few of people get so upset over something so absurd in a
amateur network that has more problems trying to remain compatible with
ancient '640k is enough' ideology (not to mention outdated FTS1 specs)
that when something comes along as simple as a 8 character string, it
could be traced to the root of it all.

If that's the case, then the true spirit of Fidonet as I knew it in the
very early days (yes, I'm from the bay area) is long since gone. Instead
hatred and anger drives the wheels now. All for something along the
lines of 8 simple characters, but after all, this *is* Fidonet.

Many folks should be ashamed of themselves.
