I would say a kitten unless you get a grown cat that has been a house cat.  I
have had one or two grown cats that I got from someone moving that did okay
but kittens can be trained from the beginning whats allowed or not allowed.
Right now all my cats are outside cats but they run in the door every chance
they get to get some petting. :)  Really they're not mine but my neighbor's
cats didn't like his dobermans so they took up with me & my wife 4 years ago
and we've been having litters born here every since. :)
