If you're actually in battle or some such, you'd want to be able to swap
magazines before you actually fire your last round so that you don't have
to be concerned about releasing the bolt once you reload.
A friend of mine is a retired Army Ranger. He tells us that in his M-16
they used to make the third-from-last round a tracer so that they didn't
have to count. When they see the tracer, they grab a fresh magazine.
Don't know why it was third from last - I suppose if you're firing burst
on an M-16 you're less likely to actually "shoot dry" that way.

The term "iron sights" refers to any type of sights without lenses. No
laser, no magnifying scopes, no red dot scopes, nor these new
"holosights". Just a groove-and-post sight, an apperture (peep) sight,
etc.
I saw someone hit a metallic silhouette at 1000 yards 5 out of 5 this
weekend with an SKS (just for fun, of course). Using a stock Russian SKS
which he'd sighted in beforehand. The numbers on the tangent were off -
he had to set it at about 650 on the slider, not 1000 - but since he'd
sighted it in he knew where to put it.
So, at least some of those SKSs out there are credible "sniper" rifles.
*I'm* not that good, even prone, but I do okay.
