This is the "tech" echo terms like "real long" belong in the
Linux echo. ;-) 

Parallel cable maximum length is 10 feet. 

Serial cable maximum length is 50 feet (longer lengths cause
com errors & garbage characters). 

I made a 40 foot serial cable for myself and used to use it at
work.

That would be the 'standard' parallel. Many dot matrix printers
also had serial ports. ;-)

There are 'booster boxes' available for longer runs of cable.
