While I can't guess if this is related to your problem or not, most UNIX 
systems will go into a funky mode if your login is all upper case.  They 
presume that you can't do lower case at all.
They then attempt to accommodate you by using upper case in place of lower 
case, but I think (I have never really fiddled with this) that anything mixed 
case will fail.
