The following is a review by Denby Richards in the latest issue of MUSICAL
OPINION of the CD recording of the MILLENNIUM SUITE by Bernard J Taylor:
The CD is available of the First Stage Classics label and features the
Polish State Philharmonic Orchestra of Katowice, conducted by Jerzy
Swoboda, and features Bernard Robertson on piano. The work lasts for 52
minutes.
QUOTE:
Bernard J Taylor is a natural composer who can express himself in melodic
and dramatic terms which have been particularly successful in stage works
based on such titles as Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice and,
most recently, Nosferatu, based on the Dracula legend. That these are
performed and have been recorded on the First Stage label suggests that
Taylor has a following both in the UK and abroad - and, indeed, two of his
songs have recently been included on a CD by Lesley Garrett.
The MILLENNIUM SUITE is exactly what it purports to be: five atmospheric
movements designed to sum up where we are now, how we got here and what
should await us. These are The Birth of Chivalry, The Age of
Oppression, The Enlightenment, The Road to Democracy and The Triumph
of Democracy. If these titles seem a trifle pompous then listen to them
and accept the composers integrity. For this is music to enjoy, yet
also music to be moved by.
I look forward to hearing and hopefully seeing one of the operas. The
composers cooperation with Gareth Price in the scoring may well have
brought some extra craft into the work, but the underlying inspiration
remains the work of a composer to watch.
