Yep.  My Dad used 'tricks' like that... and their residence was
in South Alabama, which hasn't escaped the 'march of the fire
ants'!  He used it on any variety.  Just be careful when you
transfer them that you don't allow any on *you* (make 'em stay
on the shovel!   :)
