Crap. Say it isn't so. I swear by Tom Swan. My first experience with one
of his books was Mastering C++ 4.5. it was excellent. The only thing that
had me cursing is that the entire 1500 page book was dedicated to C++. Only
a mention of the Win API - which po'ed me. Tom had a earlier book on Win
API and with the MS Win API changing all the time and buggy as hell from
what I have read and heard, i didn't want to venture into that 'Unknonw
Country' alone. I would actually like to live long enough to outlive the
implementation of my apps.
My apps - as you can tell from my previous msg - have taken many man-years of
effort - for one apps. Sheesh, I have had many a 'santiy checks' on this
'work'. What pray tell are these 'tools vendors' - compiler writers thinging
about when they think of us developers?
It seems to me they are bending to the trend of putting out superficial
products like so many software vendors because the technology is changing so
rapidly - faster than they can keep up. What we needed - us Pascal
developers was a 32 -bits DOS and 32 bit compilers so we could just recompile
out 16 bit Pascal apps. This wouyld have given us the time we need - and
most importantly - the money we could earn from our logner lived products -
to move into the next technology. Nope we were dumped - by MS, IBM and
Borland. Screw them all. I hope they lose a lot of money as a result. They
are costing me serious money here.
Now Java - that looks interesting. it is free and from what I read in a
fortune magazine it is sort of a comspiracy against MS to bring Gates down to
their level of incompetency - tho Gates has his own personal devils in that
arena IMHO.
Consummers just do not want to understand or deal with shallow functionality
that they get with Windows Apps but that is the way it is. Windows apps cost
us developers a lot and we have no choice but pass that on to the consummers
- who else? But that is njot the cause of the shallow function Windows apps.
Th e cause is the complexity levels and who controls the information we need
to develop 'robust' apps.
Want to learn Win API - then know that it will cost thousands of dollars to
go to many of MS expensive courses. That may be fine for businesses who are
large enough to afford that but not for small developers. Eventually the
small developers are forced out and the prices of the products the big boys
sells goes up - astronomically. No more legit competitors.
Well so much for consummers. They are the ultimate brunt of this scam.
