It depends on the network OS at each machine. Until they all run the same
thing, they won't communicate with each other. That thing may be TCP/IP, or
netbui, or IPX....

I have no netbui protocol running on my LAN here - all machines communicate
with each other quite happily. I run three flavours of Windows, occasional
DOS, a couple of versions of Linux, and an occasional Apple.
