BK> My mesage is short and sweet. If you are interested in Volkswagens(pre
BK> 80') I would like you to respond. I have a 63' bettle that has the rear
BK> of a baja bug, but the front is stock.
I've owned a 72 Super Beetle...Got it new. $1956.65 I think...It died
16 YEARS later, because a telephone post got in my way. |-))
Accident because of snow... |,-(
The odo was at MINIMUM 169,000 miles !! ... a little more...
I remember, NOT OVER 170,000.
The engine was never "machined". The only major work I did was
( at about 99,000 miles ), open the engine, (oil was leeking) and
change the seals, and change the inserts of the crank and cam shafts, and
the piston rings. With the 20W50 Castrol oil I used, you could still
see the honing marks in the cylinders.
Yes! I know what I'm talking about... [ honing |-) ]
I changed oil every 2000 miles, because the magazine `Hot
Volks& dune buggies' said: "With an air cooled engine, there are
hot spots in the engine. And they "harm" the oil more.
So, change oil at 2000 miles intervals, you won't regret."
... I know that, now !!!
At about 32,000 miles, after the waranty was over, I installed:
- High lift rocker arms. ( It's like a high lift cam ).
- Two barrel carb. ( As the `Hot-Vlks & dune buggies' magazine told:
special intake manifold, and Ford's 1949-to-1954 2bbl carb )
- The "header type" exhaust ( To make a greater gases flow out, because
of rockers, and more air with 2 bbl and intake... ).
- High capacity oil pump ( To make sure to compensate for more HPs ).
- I also installed 2 air filters: My old '65 Volks one, and the
1972 Super Beetle original. Routing done with plastic tubing,
for homes, and flexible hoses for cloth driers...
- Installed: Oil pressure gage, tachometer, Ampmeter.
And I could "eat" the Datsun 510s and the Toyotas !!
AND ( don't tell ) Celicas, with 2 persons in it... 2,000 cc engine.
That helped me for sure, and the other guy never thoutgh of that !!
The guy, after the little drag at a red light, made me a sign,
to stop close to his car.
He made me open my engine hood !!
He did not beleive I DID NOT have a super charger !!!
And we chat, each about our cars...
6,100-6,200 RPM in 1st, and 2nd ...
In 3rd, fear of police stoped me...
On highway, it could go to a little more than 75 mph, in 3rd.
For a `quiet' `small' 60 HP engine Beetle,
it was pulling hard !! |-)
BUT, and BUT..., the 60 HP was on the asphalt, RIGHT under the rear
WHEELS.
The so called 92 HP imports... That was on a TEST BENCH !!
NO fan belts and radiator fan to rev... !! SO...
NO generator/alternator !! and
NO water pump !!!
NO transmission friction !!
NO differential friction !!
NO wheel bearing friction !!
And so on, and so on !!!
... Right at the pressure plate (or the starter ring gear)...
See what I mean ??
Heads in the sand !! Like the big bird !!
So GUESS what was LEFT at THEIR wheels ?!?!?!?
Had Assymetric Michelins on it the [ X-AS ], from 33,000 miles up
to 106,000 miles. What a ride !!
After that: Pirelli...
In 16 years, you "play" a lot with a car...
Sooooo... How MANY, how long, what year BeetleS did you get ?
See you L8R, and...
Qapla' ! OÄð ÷÷÷÷ÄÄÄÄ ( o*) Lieutenant jr. Jean.
... From a guy, near Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
